Street signs, Vancouver, BC

The original Chinatown in Vancouver was located at East Pender and Columbia Street. When the Great Northern Railway acquired this area in 1905, many Chinese were displaced and moved a short distance west to the Shanghai and Canton Alleys. Shanghai Alley was home to an opium factory (before drug laws were introduced in 1908), but the alley was mostly filled with tenements to house Chinese workers, with shops at street level.
